Job Overview

Applications are sought for applications from Senior Biomedical Scientists (BMS) who have current HCPC registration and meet the person specification for a Senior BMS position. It is desirable that applicants have an MSc qualification in Haematology (or are working towards one) or a Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science (FIBMS).

You will join our friendly and enthusiastic team working in the busy Blood Science Laboratory as a Senior Biomedical Scientist within the Haematology & Transfusion department. You will help provide a 24-hour continuous service for the trust and you will help provide clinical staff with a high-quality service, assisting your colleagues with providing accurate and timely results.

The Senior BMS Haematology Section Lead has responsibilities for the governance, performance, and quality of aspects across all of the department under the direction of senior managers. The post holder will supervise the day to day running of the department to enable the provision of a high-quality Haematology service that meets UK Pathology Accreditation Standards. The post holder will be expected to provide supervision of Haematology team members, leading both professionally and technically, to ensure completion of the day-to-day work.

Please note, base will be Whiston Hospital Site but rotation across all MWL Pathology Sites is required.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations on a rotational basis and play a lead role in the Haematology Department.
  • Ensure that equipment is used in accordance with departmental policies and supplier’s instructions.
  • Undertake routine and more complex maintenance procedures on the analysers within the Department. To carry out appropriate internal maintenance procedures and maintain maintenance records
  • Undertake the repair of complex laboratory analysers and installing replacement components as requested by the supplier.
  • Ensure prompt technical validation and authorisation of multiple test sets from laboratory investigations ensuring accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols. Also to assess the validity of the results as to whether conflicting information is due to the pathology of the patient, contamination, or compromised integrity of the sample prior to release of the results for clinical validation.
  • First line management of the Haematology support and specialist BMS staff.
  • Prepare and present section performance reports
  • Manage risks and incidents

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • A recognised Biomedical Science degree with honours which is acceptable to the HCPC
  • Registration with Health Care Professional Council (HCPC)
  • Fellowship of the institute of Biomedical Science/Masters in Biomedical Science or equivalent qualification or experience


Desirable criteria

  • Membership of the institute of Biomedical Science
  • Willing to pursue further qualifications


Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

  • Substantial experience as a Registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist or equivalent
  • Detailed working knowledge of laboratory information and management computer systems and standard IT packages eg word processing and spreadsheets
  • Ability to work within all specialised areas of the department including Immunology
  • Full knowledge of theoretical and practical laboratory procedures
  • Ability to organise own workload and that of subordinate staff
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Knowledge of H&S risk assessment requirements, including COSHH regulations and assessments
