What We Look For In a Japanese Tutor

• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of Japanese hiragana, katakana, and kanji writing systems, grammar structures including particles, verb conjugations, honorific language (keigo), sentence patterns, vocabulary acquisition, listening comprehension, and cultural context. Ability to explain Japanese sentence structure, counter words, and formal versus informal registers while preparing students for JLPT examinations or academic Japanese coursework.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching character recognition and writing practice, grammatical pattern application, and conversational fluency development. Guides students through reading comprehension of Japanese texts, constructing grammatically correct sentences, applying appropriate politeness levels, and understanding cultural nuances in communication. Emphasizes immersive practice and connects Japanese language to cultural topics including business etiquette and media.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with Japanese language curricula and JLPT levels, and common challenges such as memorizing kanji, mastering particle usage, and distinguishing formality levels. Adapts instruction using spaced repetition for character study, authentic Japanese media, and conversational role-play to support learners from absolute beginners through advanced students preparing for proficiency certifications or study abroad.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
