Position Overview

Camp Emerald Bay is a premier outdoor youth camp located on beautiful Santa Catalina Island, serving thousands of Scouts and visitors each year. The camp operates year-round and is known for its waterfront programs, rugged island environment, and commitment to youth development, safety, and stewardship of natural resources.

The Facility Director is responsible for the maintenance, safety, and operation of all physical facilities, infrastructure, and grounds at Camp Emerald Bay. This role ensures the camp’s buildings, utilities, equipment, and systems are maintained to high standards, supporting safe, efficient, and high-quality program delivery year-round.

This is an on-site residential position on Catalina Island with limited access to mainland services. It requires physical labor, outdoor work, and occasional evenings or weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee maintenance and repair of all camp facilities, including cabins, restrooms, program areas, docks, equipment, vehicles, and vessels
  • Manage utilities and infrastructure systems, including water, wastewater, electrical, propane, fire suppression, and communications
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules and long-term capital improvement plans
  • Supervise, train, and schedule maintenance staff and seasonal facilities personnel
  • Coordinate and oversee contractors, vendors, and inspectors
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, fire, and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and spare parts
  • Respond to facility-related emergencies and after-hours maintenance needs as required
  • Assist with camp setup, seasonal transitions, and special projects
  • Collaborate closely with the Camp Director and program leadership to support camp operations
  • Administer and enforce the Council’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) in compliance with Cal/OSHA and applicable regulations, including safety training, documentation, hazard mitigation, and incident reporting.
  • Assist in the development and oversight of the annual facilities operating budget.
  • Comply with established Council business procedures, including purchasing policies, accounting for petty cash, and other assigned funds
  • Maintain positive relationships with local agencies, lessors, and the greater island community

Education

  • High School Diploma

Qualifications

Required

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Eligible for employment and registration with Scouting America
  • Experience in facilities management, maintenance, construction, or related trade
  • Strong working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanics, and general maintenance
  • Ability to manage staff and work independently in a remote island environment
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work outdoors in varying weather and terrain

Preferred

  • Experience in camp, resort, park, or remote facilities operations
  • Familiarity with California health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Experience with water treatment and wastewater systems
  • Background in Scouting or youth-serving organizations
  • SCUBA Certification (training provided if needed)

Licenses

  • Valid driver’s license (boat or marine experience a plus)
  • CPR and First Aid Certification (training provided if needed)
  • Scouting America Camp Ranger Certification (training provided if needed)

Salary or Salary Range: $70,304 – $85,000
