Job Description
The Director of Development is responsible for executing campaign and major gift strategies for New London Hospital (NLH) and Newport Health Center (NHC).
This role balances direct portfolio management and donor engagement with department leadership responsibilities, including budgeting, systems, staff supervision, and the growth of a grateful patient fundraising program in partnership with clinical teams.
Working closely with the Senior Director of Community Partnerships and Engagement and the Dartmouth Health Medical and Healthcare Advancement team, this role translates fundraising strategy into measurable results, managing a portfolio of leadership donors and ensuring consistent progress toward philanthropic goals.
The Director oversees fundraising efforts from individuals, foundations, and corporations while aligning these efforts with NLH’s strategic priorities.

Campaign Implementation and Execution.
- Implement campaign strategies in coordination with the Senior Director and senior leadership.
- Execute campaign roadmap, including timelines, budgeting, and resource allocation.
- Oversee campaign communications, ensuring consistent messaging and branding.
- Track campaign progress, gift commitments, and donor engagement to ensure measurable results.
- Ensure a personal focus on major and principal gift fundraising, managing a portfolio of approximately 100-150 leadership and major gift prospects with potential gift capacity of $50,000+.
- Drive moves management, including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors.
- Collaborate with the Senior Director and senior leadership on principal gift strategy, preparing proposals, briefing materials, and tailored solicitations.
- Coordinate donor communications, including proposals, impact reports, and stewardship updates.
- Oversee and expand NLH’s Hope Society planned giving program to build sustainable long-term philanthropic resources.
- Promote a culture of philanthropy across NLH/NHC by partnering with clinical and operational teams, encouraging grateful patient engagement, and integrating philanthropy into the patient and staff experience.
- Support and prepare trustees, volunteers, and physician champions for donor engagement; track activity and follow-up.
- Partner with hospital leadership, trustees, clinical teams, committees and Dartmouth Health Medical and Healthcare Advancement colleagues to coordinate fundraising efforts and best practices.
- Assist senior leaders and committees with cultivation and solicitation strategies.
- Supervise and mentor development staff by setting clear goals, providing feedback, monitoring performance, and supporting professional development within a collaborative environment.
- Develop annual fundraising plans, metrics, and pipeline strategies aligned with organizational priorities
- Oversee departmental budgeting, forecasting, CRM reporting, and data integrity
- Guide event strategy and resource allocation to support fundraising outcomes and ROI
- Represent the organization in the community and maintain relationships that advance philanthropic goals.
- Perform other assigned responsibilities, upholding the values of collaboration, compassion, accountability, and excellence.
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive fundraising experience, including major gift cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
- Experience in campaign execution or capital campaign support strongly preferred.
- Proven success securing major gifts ($25K-$250K+; higher preferred).
- Strong project and pipeline management skills; moves management expertise.
- Ability to work closely with senior leadership, board members, and volunteers.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Experience supervising staff and coordinating development programs.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and donor databases.
- Ability to travel locally and regionally.
