Job Duties/Scope Of Work
Responsibilities
The Scientist will support the Land Stewardship organization at HMIS, which provides functions including land management, long-term stewardship, energy management, and aviation. The Aviation and Remote Sensing Program for the Hanford Site encompasses the small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) Program, advanced remote sensing capabilities, and the Manned Aviation Program. The Scientist will play a key role in maintaining and developing geospatial datasets, processing and organizing 3D models and point clouds, and creating static map products for various organizational needs. In addition, the Scientist will be responsible for performing research using various databases to support our land management program and long-term stewardship programs. Responsibilities
The Scientist will support the Land Stewardship organization at HMIS, which provides functions including land management, long-term stewardship, energy management, and aviation. The Scientist will play a key role in maintaining and developing geospatial datasets, processing and organizing 3D models and point clouds, and creating static map products for various organizational needs. In addition, the Scientist will be responsible for performing research using various databases to support our land management program and long-term stewardship programs. Other job expectations include but are not limited to the following:
- Providing excellent customer service while interacting with a variety of Hanford Site organizations and contractors in support of the Land Stewardship program.
- Developing, maintaining, and updating geospatial datasets (e.g., feature classes) that are essential to Land Stewardship and broader site operations.
- Managing and processing geospatial data collected by sUAS or other aircraft, including LiDAR, 3D models, and photogrammetry.
- Producing high-quality maps and geospatial visualizations using GIS software and web-based tools for use in internal documents, presentations, and other platforms.
- Implementing efficient processes for collecting geospatial information during field walkdowns and making data available throughout the organization.
- Participating in the evaluation and adoption of new sUAS and remote sensing technologies and contributing to program development and improvement.
- Supporting the use of imagery and other remotely sensed data to facilitate automated change detection and geospatial analysis.
- Collaborating closely with other team members, internal customers, and external partners to achieve project goals.
- Communicating effectively and professionally with HMIS organizations, peers, management, internal customers, subcontractors, outside agencies, and the Department of Energy (DOE).
- Ensuring adherence to safety standards and regulatory requirements during sUAS operations and field activities.
- Maintaining detailed records and documentation of geospatial data and project activities for compliance and quality assurance.
- Managing multiple project tasks simultaneously, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic operational environment.
- Conducting research using various databases to locate documents, drawings and reports, and interpreting and summarizing the results.
- Demonstrating commitment to ongoing professional development and learning new geospatial technologies relevant to HMIS and Hanford Site operations.
- May be expected to work outside of regular shift hours to support special mission flights or urgent data collection needs.
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL:
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential badge.
- BA/BS degree plus 5 years of experience in geospatial data management, map product development, aviation/sUAS program operations, geospatial data processing, and/or geospatial application support -OR- an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficient with computer applications, including Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential badge.
- BA/BS degree plus 9 years of experience and advanced proficiency in geospatial data management, map product development, aviation/sUAS program operations, geospatial data processing, and/or geospatial application support -OR- an equivalent combination of education and experience.
