Position Summary


The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO-I) is responsible for ensuring the safe handling, storage, use, transportation, and disposal of radioactive materials within the Nuclear Medicine department. The role ensures compliance with the guidelines of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), and hospital policies while promoting radiation safety for patients, staff, visitors, and the environment.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Implement and monitor the Radiation Safety Programme in accordance with AERB regulations.
  • Ensure safe handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of radioactive materials and radioactive waste.
  • Monitor occupational radiation exposure of staff using personal dosimeters and maintain dose records.
  • Conduct routine radiation surveys and contamination monitoring in controlled and supervised areas.
  • Ensure compliance with AERB licence conditions and maintain all statutory documentation.
  • Maintain records of radioactive isotope procurement, utilization, inventory, and disposal.
  • Conduct regular inspections of Nuclear Medicine facilities to ensure adherence to radiation safety standards.
  • Investigate radiation incidents, contamination events, or abnormal exposures and recommend corrective actions.
  • Coordinate periodic calibration, preventive maintenance, and quality assurance of radiation monitoring equipment.
  • Train employees, students, and contractors on radiation protection practices and emergency response procedures.
  • Ensure proper use of radiation shielding, personal protective equipment (PPE), and warning signage.
  • Liaise with AERB, BARC, and other regulatory authorities during inspections and audits.
  • Support Nuclear Medicine Physicians and Technologists during radionuclide therapy and diagnostic procedures.
  • Participate in NABH quality initiatives and departmental audits.
  • Prepare and submit regulatory reports as required by AERB.


Educational Qualification:


  • B.Sc. Physics (or equivalent science qualification as per AERB eligibility)
  • AERB/BRIT/BARC-approved Radiation Safety Officer (RSO-I) Certification
  • Valid RSO authorization from AERB
