President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Location: Sacramento, CA

Work Type: Onsite | Frequent Travel Required

Role Overview

The President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the overall leadership, strategy, and operational management of a statewide, mission-driven membership organization serving the aging and older adult services sector.

This role partners closely with the Board and Executive Committee to define and execute the organization’s strategic vision, advocate on behalf of members, strengthen external influence, and ensure long-term organizational sustainability. The CEO serves as the public face of the organization, building consensus across a diverse membership base while advancing policy, advocacy, and leadership priorities at both state and national levels.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • Lead the development and execution of the organization’s long-term strategic plan in collaboration with the Board
  • Serve as primary staff partner to the Board of Directors and Executive Committee
  • Align programs, policies, and resources with strategic priorities and member needs
  • Anticipate national and state-level trends impacting older adult services and guide members accordingly

Advocacy & External Relations

  • Lead proactive advocacy efforts with state and federal legislators, regulators, and policymakers
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with government officials, peer associations, and stakeholder organizations
  • Position the organization as a recognized leader in public policy discussions impacting older adults
  • Represent the organization publicly and serve as a trusted spokesperson

Membership Engagement

  • Build deep relationships with member organizations across diverse segments and sizes
  • Foster collaboration and consensus among members with varied priorities
  • Communicate value clearly to retain and grow membership
  • Ensure members feel heard, supported, and actively engaged

Organizational & Financial Leadership

  • Lead, develop, and retain a high-performing executive and management team
  • Ensure effective staffing, performance management, and leadership development
  • Oversee financial stewardship, budgeting, and compliance to ensure long-term viability
  • Establish and maintain effective operational structures, policies, and infrastructure

  • Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, and transparency
  • Actively support diversity, equity, and inclusion across leadership, staff, and membership
  • Inspire trust, professionalism, and shared purpose throughout the organization

Required Competencies

  • Strategic Vision: Ability to assess complex policy, advocacy, and sector dynamics and translate them into actionable strategy
  • Executive Leadership: Proven ability to lead senior teams, manage change, and deliver results
  • Advocacy & Influence: Strong political acumen and credibility with policymakers and regulators

  • Collaboration & Consensus-Building: Skilled at uniting diverse stakeholders toward common goals

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • 10+ years of progressive senior leadership experience in:
  • Aging services, healthcare, public policy, or association leadership
  • Prior CEO or executive director experience strongly preferred
  • Experience working within California’s political and regulatory environment
  • Non-profit leadership and board partnership experience required
