If you are actively enrolled in a Registered Nurse program at an accredited school and have completed at least one academic term, which included a clinical component then this is a great opportunity for you! As a Nurse Technician, you will be responsible for providing nursing care and support to patients under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) in a defined care team and in accordance with the scope of practice.

This is an hourly position working variable shifts/days.

Essential Functions

The nurse technician is authorized only to perform specific nursing functions within the limits of their education, up to their skills and knowledge, as verified by their nursing program and as outlined in WAC 246-840-870. The nursing technician may:

  • Assists with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges under the direction of licensed RN. Activities include assessing patient, inventory/storing patient belongings, providing patient with relevant personal care/comfort items, orienting patient/family and transporting patient to room or other location using wheelchairs, stretchers, or patient bed
  • Performs and documents all clinical activities within scope of practice.
  • Observes and reports changes in patient care to the RN.
  • Obtains, labels, and transports a variety of samples (e.g. urine, stool, sputum, specimens, and blood products).
  • Communicates effectively with the care team in order to develop an effective interdisciplinary plan of care; documents relevant patient data in accordance with work unit standards.
  • Maintains a neat and organized work environment.
  • Orders, stocks, and replenishes supplies and equipment as necessary, identifies and reports problems with supplies or equipment.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
  • Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures, as well as labor agreements.
  • Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization’s values.
  • Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization.
  • Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required by management, be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Nursing Technician reports to the Nursing Department Director. This individual is a student enrolled in a Registered Nurse program at an accredited school and has completed at least one academic term, which included a clinical component or an individual who has completed the Registered Nurse course of study and is awaiting the results of their NCLEX exam.

Education

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Must be a student in good standing and have completed at least one academic term which included a clinical component/or a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing awaiting results of licensing exam for Registered Nurse, but no longer than 30 days past graduation. Must be able to provide documentation of current clinical competencies from completed Nursing School course work for each completed quarter of education.

License

  • Must be registered by the Washington State Department of Health as a Nursing Technician.

Certification

  • HCP (Healthcare Provider) Level of BLS (Basic Life Support) within 30 days of hire

Skills/Competencies

Competencies will increase as student progresses through Nursing program.

  • Critical thinking skills: Seeks resources for direction. Performs supervised problem solving. Decision-making is logical and deliberate.
  • Demonstrate accountability. Practices within legal and ethical guidelines.
  • Demonstrates competency in ability to care for customers/patients across the age continuum.
  • Demonstrates competency on equipment listed on department specific checklist.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, sitting, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, and pulling.
  • Manual dexterity, ability to lift/carry up to 30 pounds (supplies and equipment). Manual dexterity of hands and feet to ambulate 8 to 12 hours per shift and adroitly manage multiple pieces of equipment/tubes/invasive lines.
  • Physical strength to perform CPR (bed/floor), lift and push/pull 60 to 300 pounds (with assistance) as often as 20 times per 8 to 12 hours and perform constant walking, twisting, turning, and stretching maneuvers in patient care and use of equipment.
  • Emotional stability: Conducive to dealing with a high stress level for 8 to 12 hours at a time associated with caring for acute patients/families, fast-paced physical activity, rapidly changing patient conditions, emotional demands of patients and their families, and demands of maintaining effective working relationships with peers, managers, physicians, and other health care workers.
  • Good reading eyesight. Is able to see clearly 20 feet or more, to judge distance and space relationships, and to see peripherally.
  • Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with physicians, nurses, health care professionals, patients and/or family, and the public.
