Position Title: Museum Store Assistant Manager

Reports To: Museum Store Manager

Status: Hourly, Non-exempt

Job Summary: The Museum Store Assistant Manager supports the Museum Store Manager in overseeing all aspects of daily store operations. This role plays a key part in maintaining an efficient, welcoming, and visitor‑focused retail environment. Responsibilities include assisting with merchandise presentation and inventory management, processing sales and memberships, and ensuring that every guest receives exceptional customer service. The Assistant Manager also helps guide staff, uphold store standards, and contribute to a positive and engaging experience for all Museum guests.

Key Responsibilities

General

  • Arrive on time and ready to work, as scheduled.
  • Maintain an accurate record of time worked using web-based time and attendance system.
  • Work occasional mandatory overtime, as necessary.
  • Work in a professional and cooperative manner with other AMFA associates and employees.
  • Maintain a professional, neat, clean, well-groomed appearance.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

Job Specific

  • Coordinates and partners with the Store Manager on comprehensive short and long-range marketing plans and programs, to support revenue objectives for the Store.
  • Source unique merchandise with a strong artistic bias, that fits the Store’s vision.
  • Work with artists and artisans, locally, regionally, and internationally to create exceptional one-of-a-kind merchandise for the store.
  • Help to create a memorable shopping experience with strong visual merchandising presentations, knowledgeable staff, and outstanding customer service.
  • Implement pricing policies for merchandise according to requirements for profitability.
  • Understand the ordering process and budget requirements.
  • Receive, process, stock, and train staff on incoming merchandise.
  • Drive and maintain sales promotions and visual merchandising strategies.
  • Create posts for the store Instagram account.
  • Create, write, and edit signage, product descriptions for the website and seasonal merchandise presentations.
  • Assist in updating and maintaining website product photos and inventory quantities.
  • Coach the performance of the sales team to meet individual sales and store goals.
  • Interview and train sales assistant candidates for open positions.
  • Assist with preparing the work schedule.
  • Perform the work of sales assistants as needed. Delegate and follow up on specific duties assigned to employees.
  • Address and document positive and negative performance. Write performance reviews.
  • Maintain and coach the daily presentation standards of the store and stockroom.
  • Ensure sales assistants follow and are held accountable for established security, sales, and record keeping procedures and practices.
  • Adheres to all AMFA policies, procedures, and practices. Represents the organization in a professional manner.

Qualifications

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred 1-3 years prior sales, customer service, and inventory management experience.
  • Preferred 1-2 years prior supervisory or management experience.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, holidays and mandatory overtime.
  • Ability to read written materials and procedures and write detailed reports.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in an efficient and efficient manner.
  • Posses strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with guests and colleagues.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365.
  • Proficient in Shopify.
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Have an artistic or creative background, with a passion for cultural institutions.

Working Conditions And Physical Requirements

  • Physical demands:
    • Regularly stand and/or walk for prolonged periods of time (up to 5 hours at a time).
    • Regularly use hands and fingers for typing, handling merchandise, and operating equipment.
    • Regularly bend, reach, or lift up to 10 lbs.
    • Frequently climb step stool.
    • Occasionally climb 6-foot ladder.
    • Occasionally lift between 25 and 50 pounds independently.


  • Communication demands:
    • Ability to speak clearly and hear well enough to communicate effectively in person and over the phone.


  • Vision demands:
    • Regular use of visual acuity to review written materials and inspect merchandise.
    • Regular use of visual acuity to view computer monitor(s).


  • Work environment/exposure:
    • Work is performed indoors, in a professional retail setting with moderate noise levels typical of an open retail environment.
    • The environment is climate-controlled with standard lighting and ventilation.
