Job Description

Mechatronics CAD Design Engineer (Outdoor Robotic Enclosure Systems) | Motion Mechanisms & Weatherproof Design

About the role

We’re looking for a Mechatronics CAD Design Engineer to take an existing autonomous ground hardware system and raise it to industry-grade standards. The work is very hands-on: improving mechanical design for movable doors/panels, increasing weather resistance and waterproofing, and making the product more reliable, serviceable, and production-ready—without overcomplicating it.

What you’ll do
  • Improve and industrialize an existing mechanical system into a robust, production-ready product with strong reliability and serviceability.
  • Design and refine movable door/panel mechanisms (hinges, sliders, latches, linkages, hard stops, dampers) for smooth operation and repeatability.
  • Develop and validate weatherproof and waterproof mechanical design: sealing concepts, gasket grooves, labyrinth features, drainage paths, IP-oriented design practices, and corrosion protection.
  • Integrate electromechanical components such as motors, actuators, gearboxes, belts/lead screws, springs, locks, sensors, and limit switches into clean mechanical layouts.
  • Improve structural stiffness and alignment for mechanisms under real-world conditions (dust, rain, vibration, temperature changes), including tolerance considerations and wear points.
  • Design quick-service mechanical joiners and modular subassemblies for fast maintenance and replacement in the field.
  • Create complete CAD deliverables: 3D models, assemblies, drawings, BOMs, tolerance notes, and assembly instructions suitable for fabrication and production.
  • Work closely with fabrication and production teams to prototype, test, and iterate quickly based on real build feedback.
  • Collaborate with electrical and controls teams to ensure good routing/protection of cables and sensors, safe actuator integration, and reliable interlocks.
  • Support verification testing and improvements based on field issues, root-cause analysis, and engineering change implementation.
What we’re looking for
  • 2+ years experience in mechanical/mechatronics CAD design for robotics, automation, industrial products, outdoor equipment, or similar systems.
  • Strong CAD skills in SolidWorks
  • Solid understanding of mechanisms and design fundamentals: fasteners, tolerance stack-up, alignment, bearings, materials, wear, vibration, and practical DFM/DFA.
  • Comfort designing for real-world deployment: sealing, corrosion prevention, drainage, service access, and durability.
  • Ability to produce shop-ready drawings and work closely with technicians to get parts built and working.
Nice to have
  • Exposure to IP-rated enclosure design (IP54/IP65/IP67 concepts), gasket selection, sealing strategies, and outdoor thermal considerations.
  • Experience with sheet metal, machined parts, castings, or composite enclosures.
  • Basic understanding of actuator sizing, load paths, and mechanism testing.
  • Familiarity with PDM/PLM and engineering change workflows.
Why join us
  • You’ll work on a product that’s already real—and make it industrial, rugged, and field-ready.
  • Strong ownership: your design decisions will directly improve reliability and user experience.
  • Fast iteration loop with direct access to fabrication and testing.
  • Performance-based recognition and growth opportunities as projects scale.
