Role Overview
The Business Development Manager will drive growth in power trading by identifying new business opportunities, building strategic relationships, and expanding the company’s footprint in electricity markets. The role involves working closely with trading, regulatory, and operations teams to optimize commercial outcomes in short-term and long-term power markets.
Key Responsibilities
Business Development & Strategy
- Identify and develop new business opportunities in power trading (bilateral contracts, exchanges, open access markets).
- Expand client base including industrial consumers, distribution companies (DISCOMs), and renewable energy developers.
- Develop and execute strategies for market entry and growth across regions.
Market Analysis
- Monitor electricity market trends, pricing, demand-supply dynamics, and regulatory changes.
- Analyze opportunities in Day-Ahead Market (DAM), Real-Time Market (RTM), Term-Ahead Market (TAM), and bilateral trading.
- Provide actionable insights to trading teams for better decision-making.
Client Relationship Management
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders (utilities, generators, traders, regulators).
- Negotiate contracts and close deals for power purchase/sale agreements.
- Ensure high customer satisfaction and repeat business.
Regulatory & Compliance
- Stay updated with regulations from authorities like CERC, SERCs, and power exchanges.
- Ensure all trading activities comply with regulatory frameworks and company policies.
Coordination & Execution
- Collaborate with internal trading, scheduling, and risk teams to execute transactions.
- Support deal structuring, pricing, and risk assessment.
- Track deal performance and profitability.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Economics, Business, or related field
- MBA/PGDM (preferred)
- 5-12 years of experience in power trading, energy markets, or related sectors
Key Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of power markets and trading mechanisms
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks in the energy sector
- Excellent negotiation and relationship management skills
- Analytical mindset with ability to interpret market data
- Communication and stakeholder management skills
- Proficiency in Excel and data analysis tools
Preferred Experience
- Experience with power exchanges (e.g., IEX, PXIL)
- Exposure to renewable energy trading (solar, wind, green energy)
- Familiarity with open access and cross-border electricity trading
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Revenue and margin growth from trading activities
- Number of new clients/contracts acquired
- Market share expansion
- Deal conversion rate and pipeline strength
Work Environment
- Fast-paced, dynamic energy trading environment
- May involve extended hours aligned with market operations
Coordinate with multiple stakeholders across regions
