Maintenance Engineer – Role Definition

A Maintenance Engineer is responsible for ensuring the continuous, reliable, and safe operation of all equipment, machinery, utilities, and facility systems within an organization. The role focuses on maintaining mechanical, electrical, and automation assets through planned preventive maintenance, timely corrective actions, and data‑driven problem‑solving. Maintenance Engineers analyse equipment performance, troubleshoot failures, and implement improvements to enhance machine uptime, efficiency, and lifecycle. They ensure compliance with safety standards, support infrastructure readiness, coordinate with internal teams and external vendors, and maintain accurate documentation. Ultimately, a Maintenance Engineer ensures operational stability, reduces unplanned downtime, and contributes to overall productivity and asset reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Performing or assisting in routine maintenance.
  • Monitoring and maintaining parts and tools inventory for infrastructure components and services.
  • Serving as first line of support for Equipment and building service problems and work requests.
  • Knowledge to use engineering drawings, schematics, and service manuals to troubleshoot, install, and repair Process Assembly machineries, Testing machineries, Paint shop.
  • Troubleshoot, install, maintain, and repair process assembly machines, test rigs, paint shop equipment, utility systems, and facility infrastructure.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics, ladder logic, and OEM service manuals for maintenance activities.
  • Install & maintain VFDs, servo drives, eddy current and DC drives, and perform tuning and parameterization
  • Install and calibrate pressure, temperature, flow, and level controls
  • Considerable knowledge of electrical systems, Substation, transformer, HT yard including high-voltage switchgear, protective relaying, grounding procedures, and electrical test equipment
  • Execute routine Preventive maintenance, Condition based maintenance, Annual maintenance services, Breakdown maintenance as per yearly Machine maintenance calendar
  • Execute Preventive, Predictive, Condition-Based, and Breakdown Maintenance per the annual maintenance plan.
  • Working knowledge of HT yard equipment, transformers, substation systems, grounding, switchgear & protective relays.
  • Maintain required logbooks, registers, daily reports, and ensure readiness for audits.
  • Perform Autonomous Maintenance checks with operators and technicians.
  • Record & monitor daily energy usage, utilities data, environmental parameters.
  • Analyse MTTR, MTBF and drive improvement in equipment reliability.
  • Implement 5S, LOTO and ensure electrical safety practices are adhered to.
  • Monitor consumption of critical spares, consumables, and maintain safety stock levels.
  • Support new machinery installation, commissioning & validation.
  • Involvement is required in RIW’s ,6 Sigma and CPS projects
  • Maintain electrical installations per regulatory compliance and Caterpillar standards.
  • Manage AMC, facility contractors & service providers.

General Requirements

  • Understands and follows all organizational policies, procedures, and rules, ensuring that all laws are obeyed, and equal employment, safety and environmental protection are practiced.
  • Good understanding of customer expectations and deliverables with an awareness of the impact of failure/cost of poor quality
  • Create safety culture within his group & make it safe workplace.
  • Manage hourly and agency folks.
  • Training for new operators (Ensure Safety / Quality / Process)
  • Good verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments and projects at the same time
  • Ability to work across all three shifts, weekends, and holidays as and when required to accomplish facility and maintenance related tasks

Required Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering EEE, Mechatronics, E&I
  • 8 years plus of experience in industrial equipment and infrastructure, maintenance, troubleshooting, Erection, Commissioning etc
  • Good knowledge of electrical & Mechanical systems,
  • Good knowledge of electrical codes and regulations.
  • Good Knowledge of electronics and instrumentation.
  • Electrical B or C Licence added advantage
