Mainframe Developer Contractor

CSI Companies is seeking an experienced Mainframe Developer with deep experience in IBM z/OS, COBOL, and enterprise batch/online processing environments. This role supports the development, enhancement, and production support of mission-critical mainframe applications.

This opportunity is ideal for a mainframe professional who thrives in large enterprise environments and enjoys working across batch, online transaction systems, and database-driven applications. You will design, develop, maintain, and support mainframe applications while ensuring reliability, performance, and stability across batch and online processing systems.

Hours: Monday – Friday, Standard Business Hours

Location: Remote / Onsite / Hybrid (Time Zone)

Pay: $55+/hour based on relevant experience, education, and credentials

Position Type: Consultant – No C2C

Work Authorization:

Candidates must be U.S. Citizens or Green Card holders. Visa sponsorship is not available for this role.

What you’ll do:

• Design, develop, and maintain mainframe applications using COBOL (and/or PL/I), JCL, and IBM z/OS technologies
• Develop and support batch processing jobs, including job streams, scheduling coordination, restarts, and abend handling
• Build and maintain online applications using CICS and/or IMS TM, including transaction and program update
• Develop and optimize data access using DB2 (SQL) and/or IMS databases
• Conduct impact analysis, effort estimation, and deliver enhancements and defect fixes through the SDLC
• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, perform debugging and root-cause analysis
• Create and maintain technical documentation, including program specifications, job flows, and runbooks
• Collaborate with business stakeholders, QA, operations, and infrastructure teams to support stable releases and deployments
• Follow secure coding practices and compliance requirements for data handling and system access

What we’re looking for:

• Hands-on experience with IBM z/OS mainframe development
• Strong proficiency in COBOL (or PL/I)
• Strong experience with JCL and batch job processing concepts
• Experience with DB2 (SQL development and data handling) and/or IMS databases
• Experience using ISPF/TSO to navigate datasets, job logs, and outputs
• Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills, including abend analysis
• Understanding of SDLC practices, testing methodologies, and release/change management processes
• Strong communication and technical documentation skills

Nice to have:

• Experience with CICS and/or IMS Transaction Manager (TM)
• Experience with performance tuning in mainframe environments
• Experience supporting high-volume enterprise systems
