Program Overview For Sustainable Cities And Transport

WRI India’s Integrated Transport Program supports India’s decarbonization journey through effective, equitable, and inclusive mobility solutions. The program focuses on advancing sustainable urban transport, including electrification of public transport, clean air initiatives, and hydrogen economy. It emphasizes strategic research, policy support, and capacity building to enable systemic changes at the sub-national level and accelerate electric mobility adoption.

Job Highlight

WRI India seeks a motivated Junior Program Associate to work on diverse projects spanning sustainable transportation. The ideal candidate should possess skills in quantitative and qualitative research, data and spatial analytics and application development. Candidates with research or technical experience in one or more of the following areas such as sustainable mobility, urban and transport planning, transportation analytics, social science, and public policy will be preferred. The goal is to generate new research, analysis, evidence, and tools to inform policy and practice for sustainable mobility as part of the SHIFT Transport Initiative.

What You Will Do

  • Support research, analytics, and the development and maintenance of web applications under the SHIFT Transport Initiative, including Analytics in Public Transport, Active Transportation and Road Network, and other relevant areas.
  • Develop visualizations, analytical tools, and frameworks to generate actionable insights for sustainable transport.
  • Collect, validate, process, and analyze data from government portals, open datasets, field surveys, and partner organizations, ensuring data quality and consistency.
  • Review and synthesize literature, policy documents, government data, and other secondary sources to support research and project objectives.
  • Document methodologies, data pipelines, analytical processes, and project outputs to facilitate knowledge sharing and project continuity.
  • Prepare presentations, reports, policy briefs, case studies, blogs, and other communication materials to disseminate findings to diverse stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and engage with government, partner organizations, and the broader research community to support project implementation, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge exchange.

What You Will Need

  • Master's Degree in Transport Engineering / Transport Planning / Economics / Social Science / Public Policy
  • 0 to 2 years of full-time work experience (post-Masters) in one or more of the following - transport planning, public transport and city bus systems, intermediate public transport, last mile connectivity, policy research, or the social sector
  • Good writing and communication skills are a requirement
  • Experience working on transportation analytics, data tools, or dashboards is desirable
  • Experience working with government, civic groups, research institutions, and the private sector on urban transport projects
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods including primary and secondary data collection and analysis
  • Hands-on experience with spatial analytical tools like ArcGIS / QGIS and other open-source applications is desirable
  • Proficiency or familiarity with data tools and programming environments (e.g., Python, R, Excel, or similar) for data processing and visualization is an advantage
  • Knowledge of policy analysis and data-oriented methodologies to identify gaps and potential areas of reform
  • Experience in academic writing and publishing to produce high-quality research outputs
  • Writing samples must be attached with the application

Potential Salary and Benefits: INR 7,50,000 to 9,00,000

Location: Bangalore/Delhi, India

Duration: 1 year Term Hire (Extendable based on performance and project requirements)
