Role Summary

Staples is hiring an IT Manager – Supply Chain Engineering to provide strong people leadership, delivery management, and execution oversight across Supply Chain SDS teams.

This role will be responsible for managing and developing engineering team members, driving delivery discipline, improving predictability, managing risks and dependencies, and partnering with stakeholders across Supply Chain SDS to ensure effective execution.

In addition to core people and delivery responsibilities, this role will help strengthen engineering execution maturity across teams by improving quality practices, automation adoption, engineering governance, delivery metrics, reusable practices, and continuous improvement. This aligns with the broader Supply Chain SDS direction of building scalable engineering maturity through standardized engineering practices, automation, quality engineering, observability, AI-assisted engineering, and delivery governance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide people leadership for Supply Chain Engineering team members, including coaching, mentoring, engagement, performance support, and career development.
  • Manage day-to-day delivery execution, priorities, risks, dependencies, and stakeholder alignment across assigned teams.
  • Work closely with product, engineering, technology, business, and partner teams to ensure delivery priorities are understood and executed effectively.
  • Improve delivery discipline through structured planning, follow-ups, action tracking, escalation management, and communication.
  • Build a strong execution culture focused on accountability, ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Track and improve delivery health using practical metrics such as progress visibility, blockers, dependency aging, quality signals, predictability, and team capacity.
  • Partner with engineering leads and architects to improve engineering practices across SDLC, QA, release readiness, automation, and governance.
  • Drive adoption of reusable practices, delivery playbooks, templates, common ways of working, and engineering standards.
  • Support improvement initiatives across quality engineering, QA automation, DevOps practices, observability, AI-assisted engineering, and delivery governance, where applicable.
  • Help identify opportunities to reduce manual effort, improve delivery consistency, and strengthen engineering maturity across teams.
  • Support onboarding, knowledge sharing, capability building, and team assimilation as Supply Chain SDS continues to scale across locations.

Requirements

Required Experience

Must Have

  • 12+ years of experience in IT / software engineering, application delivery, or technology management roles.
  • Proven experience managing engineering, development, QA, or application delivery teams.
  • Strong people management experience, including coaching, team development, performance support, and stakeholder communication.
  • Strong delivery management experience across application development, QA, platform, or enterprise technology teams.
  • Good understanding of SDLC, Agile delivery, QA practices, release management, and engineering governance.
  • Ability to manage distributed teams and drive accountability across locations.
  • Strong experience managing priorities, risks, blockers, dependencies, and escalations.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, facilitation, and follow-through skills.
  • Ability to work with global teams, technology specialists, product partners, and engineering stakeholders.

Strongly Preferred

  • Experience in Supply Chain / Retail technology environments.
  • Experience improving engineering maturity, delivery discipline, QA automation, release readiness, or engineering governance.
  • Exposure to automation, DevOps / CI-CD, observability, engineering metrics, or productivity improvement initiatives.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams across engineering, QA, support, product, business, and partner ecosystems.
  • Exposure to AI-assisted engineering, engineering productivity tools, or automation-led improvement initiatives.
  • Experience building repeatable delivery practices, playbooks, dashboards, or team operating rhythms.
Key Competencies
  • People leadership and team development
  • Delivery management and execution governance
  • Stakeholder management and communication
  • Engineering process maturity
  • Agile / SDLC understanding
  • QA and quality engineering awareness
  • Risk, dependency, and escalation management
  • Metrics-driven delivery improvement
  • Cross-team collaboration
  • Continuous improvement mindset
  • Coaching, mentoring, and capability building
What This Role Is Not

This role is not:

  • A pure project manager or status tracker.
  • A Scrum Master / coordinator role.
  • A people manager disconnected from engineering delivery.
  • A delivery manager focused only on timelines without improving engineering maturity.
  • An operations / incident management role.
  • A replacement for architects, technical leads, or product owners.
  • An additional management layer without ownership of outcomes.

Instead, this role is intended to combine people leadership, delivery execution, and engineering maturity building to help Supply Chain SDS scale with stronger discipline, capability, predictability, and ownership.

Success Measures

Success in this role would include:

  • Stronger team engagement, clarity, and execution rhythm.
  • Improved delivery predictability and stakeholder visibility.
  • Better management of risks, blockers, dependencies, and escalations.
  • Improved adoption of common engineering and delivery practices.
  • Stronger QA, automation, release-readiness, and governance discipline.
  • Improved onboarding, capability development, and team maturity.
  • Reduced delivery variability through repeatable practices and better operating discipline.
  • Increased confidence in the team’s ability to execute and mature engineering capability over time.
