They apply engineering principles to ensure building compliance with safety codes, conduct risk assessments, and investigate fire causes, often collaborating with architects, designers, and local authorities.
Key ResponsibilitiesDesign & Engineering: Develop, design, and implement fire protection systems, including sprinkler, detection, and suppression systems.Compliance & Risk: Ensure buildings meet local, state, and federal fire safety regulations and codes.Assessments & Modeling: Conduct fire risk assessments, fire safety inspections, and computer modeling of fire behavior.Collaboration: Work with architects, contractors, and owners on new construction or renovation projects.Investigation: Investigate fire scenes to determine causes and improve future safety measures. Required Qualifications & SkillsEducation: Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Engineering, Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering.Certifications: Often requires Professional Engineer (PE) licensure, or specialized certifications in fire safety.Technical Skills: Proficiency in CAD software, fire modeling software, and knowledge of building codes and fire behavior.Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and communication skills to work with diverse teams. Work EnvironmentFire Engineers work in consulting firms, government agencies, construction companies, or in-house at industrial plants. The role may involve both office-based design work and on-site inspections.
