Job Description
Overall, Purpose of the Job
We are seeking to appoint a Buildings and Operations Supervisor to help us look after our wonderful building and the huge variety of things that we do in and around it.
About The Role
As Buildings and Operations Supervisor, you will play an essential part in the smooth and safe running of a busy public museum. You will support day‑to‑day building operations, ensuring that public spaces, back‑of‑house areas and event spaces are well presented, functional and welcoming for all visitors and staff.
Working closely with teams across the museum — including Front of House, Events, Education, Cleaning and Collections Care — you will help coordinate maintenance activities, support contractors, and assist with event delivery.
This is an active, hands‑on role involving regular movement of furniture and equipment, receipt and dispatch of deliveries, routine building checks, and general support for the smooth functioning of the building. You will support basic AV setups for meetings and events, with training provided as required. You will also contribute to the on‑call rota and occasionally work flexible hours to support openings, closings and events.
About You
You will be someone who enjoys working with others and takes pride in maintaining high‑quality public spaces. You’re friendly, calm under pressure, and confident communicating with a wide range of people — from colleagues to contractors to event clients. You take pride in delivering excellent service and have good attention to detail.
While you will support the operation of building systems such as access control, heating, lighting and alarms, we do not expect prior specialist knowledge. Instead, you will bring a practical, proactive attitude and a willingness to learn how to use the relevant systems and software, as well as confidence using everyday IT tools and office software.
You’ll also have good organisational skills, the ability to prioritise changing tasks, and the physical capability to undertake regular manual handling tasks. You’re comfortable identifying problems as they arise and taking initiative to resolve them or escalate appropriately. Above all, you will be motivated by providing excellent service and working collaboratively across teams to keep the museum running smoothly.
