Location: Vijayanagara, Karnataka, India
Work Mode: On-site
Industry: Primary Metal Manufacturing,Industrial Machinery Manufacturing,Manufacturing
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Behavioural Specialist will lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of a Behavioural Science-Based Safety (BSBS) program across steel plant operations. Operating within a safety consulting framework, this role sits at the intersection of applied behavioural science, industrial psychology, and occupational safety — driving a lasting cultural shift from compliance-driven safety to proactive, people-centred safety leadership.
The specialist will work closely with plant management, supervisors, frontline workers, and HSE teams to analyse unsafe behaviours, identify root causes through behavioural science methodologies, and co-create interventions that embed safe behaviours as the cultural norm in high-risk steel manufacturing environments.
Key Responsibilities
Program Implementation
Support in deploying a comprehensive BSBS framework tailored to the specific hazard profile of steel plant operations (blast furnaces, rolling mills, crane operations, hot metal handling, etc.).
Support in implementing behaviour observation tools, checklists, and data collection systems aligned with critical safety behaviours (CSBs).
Establish baseline behavioural data and define measurable KPIs for behaviour-based safety performance.
Integrate BSBS with existing safety management systems.
Behavioural Analysis & Observation
Conduct structured behavioural observations on the shop floor to identify at-risk behaviours and triggers.
Diagnose systemic behavioural patterns.
Analyse near-miss reports, incident data, and audit findings through a behavioural lens to identify precursor patterns.
Use functional behavioural analysis techniques to uncover hidden motivators of unsafe acts.
Training & Capacity Building
Design and deliver BSBS training programmes for all levels — senior management, supervisors, safety officers, and frontline workers.
Coach and certify internal Behaviour Observation Champions / Peer Observers within the plant.
Conduct workshops on human factors, safety culture, cognitive biases, and error-trapping techniques specific to steel operations.
Develop learning modules and toolbox talk materials to sustain BSBS concepts on the floor.
Stakeholder handholding in Culture Change
Facilitate management walkabouts and leadership safety conversations using behavioural coaching techniques.
Build credibility and trust with frontline workers to encourage open reporting and voluntary participation in safety observations.
Develop and drive employee engagement campaigns to reinforce safe behaviour recognition and positive reinforcement loops.
Data, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
Maintain the BSBS database — track observation frequency, safe vs. at-risk behaviour ratios, and intervention outcomes.
Prepare monthly and quarterly BSBS performance dashboards for client leadership and consulting management.
Conduct periodic program reviews and recalibrate interventions based on data trends and leading indicator analysis.
Benchmark program performance against industry best practices and BSBS case studies in steel and allied sectors.
Qualifications & Education
Bachelor's degree in Psychology/ Behavioural Science/ Sociology/ Social work/ Anthropology, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related field — Mandatory.
Master's degree in Industrial/Organisational Psychology, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), or Safety Management — Strongly Preferred.
Certifications in Behaviour-Based Safety or Behavioural Science— Highly Desirable.
Diploma or advanced certification in Occupational Safety & Health (NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent) — Added Advantage.
