About The Role

The Senior Lead AI Engineer will play a pivotal role in advancing Capital One’s AI initiatives by designing, developing, and deploying scalable AI solutions. This remote-eligible position requires a strategic thinker with deep technical expertise in AI and machine learning, particularly in large language models, foundation models, and related AI infrastructure. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, research scientists, product managers, and program managers, to deliver innovative AI-powered products that enhance both customer experience and operational efficiency. You will be responsible for leading the development of AI components such as model training, inference, similarity search, governance, and observability, utilizing a broad stack of open-source and SaaS AI technologies. Your contributions will influence the technical vision and long-term roadmap of AI systems at Capital One, ensuring scalable, responsible, and high-performance AI solutions that align with the company's strategic objectives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields + 6+ years of experience in AI/ML development
• Master’s degree in relevant fields + 4+ years of experience in AI/ML development
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, Scala, or Java (minimum 6 years)
• Experience deploying AI solutions on cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or private clouds (preferred)
• Strong understanding of AI algorithms, large language models, and foundational AI systems
• Knowledge of open-source AI tools such as Huggingface, PyTorch, Nemo Guardrails, VectorDBs, and AWS Ultraclusters
• Experience in optimizing AI training and inference for performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency
• Proven ability to lead and mentor engineering teams and influence cross-functional stakeholders
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly
  
  

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop AI-powered products that enhance customer engagement and operational workflows
• Design, develop, test, and deploy AI software components, including foundation model training, large language model inference, and similarity search
• Implement guardrails, governance, and observability frameworks to ensure responsible AI deployment
• Leverage open-source and SaaS AI technologies, such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, and VectorDBs, to build scalable solutions
• Research and introduce state-of-the-art techniques for optimizing large-scale AI systems, focusing on performance, latency, throughput, and cost
• Contribute to the long-term technical vision and strategic roadmap for foundational AI systems at Capital One
• Mentor junior engineers and collaborate with research teams to stay at the forefront of AI advancements
