VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY: 3D MODELLING & VR TEAM

EXPERIMENTAL APPROACHES TO COLLABORATIVE HERITAGE: UCL MULTIMEDIA ANTHROPOLOGY LAB

UCL MAL is calling for participants to join the 3D modelling & VR team for our Experiments in Collaborative Heritage project, working in collaboration with Guarani and Kaiowá Indigenous communities in Brazil. This project takes place in partnership with the British Museum’s Endangered Material Knowledge Programme (EMKP) and UCL Knowledge Exchange and Innovation.

We invite applicants who have experience in working with Unreal Engine 5, web VR, 3D modelling, texturing, lighting, animation and asset optimisation to join the UCL MAL project for a period of 6 weeks starting from 6th May 2026 to participate in this exciting collaboration between anthropologists, international artists, and indigenous communities in Brazil. This is a particularly important role, as it will support the Guarani and Kaiowá community to ensure their cultural and ecological knowledge is preserved and communicated to a global audience.

Participants will gain practical experience in diverse areas, including:

• Creating assets for VR scenes
• Understanding and optimising assets for VR headsets such as the Meta Quest
• Collaborating with people from a multidisciplinary background and experience
• Engaging in new technologies like Gaussian Splatting
• Crafting engaging interactive narratives based on anthropological research
• Developing web-optimised VR iterations

Participants will be expected to dedicate 10 hours per week to team activities, helping to produce outputs for the British Museum and the Grant Museum of Zoology, and deliver real world impact. At the end of the 6-week period, all participants will receive a UCL MAL certificate confirming the activities they engaged in, skills developed, outputs created and the impact that they helped deliver. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer any financial compensation for participation.
