Job Description

Position Summary

The VIP Data Analyst is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and translating complex data into clear, meaningful insights that support decision-making across the department. This position works closely with data architects and technical staff to extract data from multiple complex systems and databases, requiring advanced knowledge of SQL and the ability to write and maintain sophisticated queries. The analyst ensures that data from various sources is accurately compiled, structured, and prepared for analysis.

Using tools such as Tableau, the VIP Data Analyst develops dashboards, reports, and visualizations that present information in a clear, accessible format for a variety of audiences. These visualizations are designed to help internal stakeholders quickly understand performance, trends, and operational outcomes. In addition to visualization, the VIP Data Analyst conducts deeper analysis of the data to identify patterns, trends, and impacts that inform program improvement, operational strategy, and policy development.

This position is responsible for producing recurring and ad hoc reports for internal leadership, operational teams, and public-facing communications. The VIP Data Analyst works collaboratively with all divisions of the Albuquerque Community Safety Department to ensure data is effectively used to support program evaluation, operational planning, transparency, and continuous improvement.

Essential And Supplemental Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below)

  • Perform a variety of gun violence analysis activities, in the jurisdictions of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County; develop and prepare charts, graphs,maps, reports, data bases and related materials in order to track and present findings related to gun violence activity.
  • Oversee the collection and analysis of all data regarding the strategies of the Violence Intervention Program to reduce gun violence.
  • Oversee the VIP SharePoint data base, input data and conduct quality assurance reviews on all data input.
  • Work with Customs Notifications team and Real Time Crime Center and US Attorney’s to develop custom notification packets.
  • Work with teams of System and Community stakeholders collaboratively to present data and data analysis for development of strategic activities to reduce gun violence.
  • Maintain Social Network Analysis of the drivers of gun violence in Albuquerque which involves reviewing investigative reports to identify peripheral associates and influencers in incidents of gun violence.
  • Maintain records and develop reports concerning gun violence activity analysis;

maintain records for in-house statistics; maintain and file data for gun violence activity analysis and management reports; prepare statistical reports as required.

  • Submit monthly data, statistical, and financial reports to any granting agency.
  • Oversee the collection, collation, analysis and dissemination of a variety of documents to assess and determine gun violence crime trends especially in relation to other types of violent crimes.
  • Develop reports based on complex data that are accessible to non-experts in the community
  • Develop and test crime prediction and resource allocation models; implement crime analysis activities and other related programs.
  • Serve on a variety of boards and committees; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence; enter, maintain and record results of pertinent board and committee decisions.
  • Maintain awareness of new developments in the field of gun violence activity analysis;

incorporate new developments as appropriate into programs.

Supplemental Functions

  • Perform a variety of office duties including typing, filing and entering information into the computer.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Attend training as required.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and

Three (3) years of crime analysis and research experience.

Additional Requirements

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Successful completion of a security background check conducted by the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI)

  • Recommend and implement goals and objectives for providing violent crime and gun violence analysis and research
  • Interpret and explain policies and procedures
  • Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing and spreadsheet applications
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the granting agency, sworn and civilian APD employees, and the general public
  • Communicate clearly and concisely. Work in a collaborative team with both System and Community stakeholders
  • Explain complex statistical analysis in the community
  • Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the general public
