Job Description

University: Blekinge Institute of Technology Country: Sweden Deadline: 2025-10-21 Fields: Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics, Engineering Mathematics Are you eager to shape the future of autonomous vehicles and advanced radar systems while developing state-of-the-art expertise in signal processing and machine learning? Sweden offers a unique opportunity for ambitious researchers to join the Systems Engineering research group at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) as a PhD student focused on radar signal processing. This position is ideal for those passionate about leveraging technology to solve pressing real-world challenges in transportation, healthcare, and security. About The University Or Research Institute Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) is a renowned Swedish university located in Karlskrona, a picturesque coastal city in southern Sweden. BTH is recognized for its strong focus on applied research and close collaboration with industry, particularly in engineering and technology fields. The university has a modern campus environment, fostering innovation and interdisciplinary learning, and is consistently ranked among the top Swedish institutions for engineering education. BTH?s strategic location in Sweden, a nation celebrated for its technological advancements, high quality of life, and progressive society, offers students a supportive and stimulating academic atmosphere. Sweden itself is a global leader in innovation, sustainability, and education, providing international students with an inclusive, multicultural experience and access to world-class research infrastructure. Research Topic and Significance The core focus of this PhD position is the development of advanced algorithms for radar networks, with a special emphasis on robust radar signal processing. Radar technology is a cornerstone of modern intelligent transportation systems, including advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles. As the adoption of radar-equipped vehicles accelerates, interference between radar systems has emerged as a critical challenge?one that can hamper the reliability and safety of both automotive and surveillance applications. The research aims to address these challenges by designing new signal processing and machine learning methods to suppress or even exploit interference, thereby enhancing sensor performance and enabling broader deployment of radar-based technologies. The outcomes of this research are expected to have far-reaching impacts on automotive safety, security, and next-generation sensor applications. Also See Sweden ? PhD in Verification and Validation of AI-Enabled Software at Blekinge Institute of? USA ? PhD and Postdoc in Autonomous Driving AI at Purdue University New Zealand ? PhD in Transportation Engineering at University of Canterbury New Zealand ? Lecturer in Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Canterbury USA ? Postdoctoral Research in Pavement Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University Project Details The Systems Engineering research group at BTH is highly experienced in radar research, with a history of developing algorithms for both long-range ultra-broadband Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and short-range Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) systems. The group has collaborated for nearly two decades with Swedish space and defense industries, focusing on interference suppression and innovative signal processing techniques. In recent years, the team has shifted attention to the challenges posed by low-cost, high-performance radar sensors, particularly in the context of growing interference in dense radar environments. The selected PhD student will be instrumental in designing and implementing novel machine learning and signal processing algorithms, integrating them into new radar systems, and validating the research through simulations and industrial experiments. The project is conducted in close collaboration with industry partners, ensuring practical relevance and opportunities for applied research. The position also includes teaching and administrative responsibilities within the department. Candidate Profile The Ideal Candidate Will Possess ? A master?s degree in electrical engineering, systems engineering, marine engineering, engineering physics, engineering mathematics, computer engineering, or a closely related field. ? Strong proficiency in mathematics, signal processing, and machine learning. ? Additional knowledge of electromagnetic field theory, control theory, and scientific programming is advantageous. ? Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. ? The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team. ? Motivation to contribute to both academic research and industrial innovation. Eligibility Requirements Include ? Admission to postgraduate education (PhD studies). ? Completion of a degree at the advanced level, or at least 240 higher education credits (with at least 60 at the advanced level), or equivalent knowledge as per Swedish Higher Education Ordinance. Application Process Blekinge Institute of Technology is located in Karlskrona, Sweden, and offers a vibrant research environment with strong industry partnerships. The PhD position is full-time (100%), with a temporary contract of up to 4 years for research, extendable to 5 years if up to 20% of the time is spent on teaching or other duties. The start date is negotiable. Application deadline: 2025-10-21 Application Materials Should Include ? A description of your background, knowledge, and experience relevant to the position. ? A CV. ? Certified degree certificates and transcripts (see universityadmissions.se for official requirements). ? The earliest date you can start work. ? An appendix of current publications (if applicable). ?
