Software Development Engineer III - Backend
Urban Company
Job Description
About the Company
Urban Company is a technology platform offering customers a variety of services at home. Customers use our platform to book services such as beauty treatments, haircuts, massage therapy, cleaning, plumbing, carpentry, appliance repair, painting, etc., all delivered in the comfort of their home and at a time of their choosing. We promise our customers a high-quality, standardized, and reliable service experience. To fulfill this promise, we work closely with our hand-picked service partners, enabling them with technology, training, products, tools, financing, insurance, and brand, helping them succeed and deliver on this promise. Urban Company started as UrbanClap in November 2014, when its founders, Abhiraj, Raghav, and Varun, realized that the home services industry was predominantly unorganized, fragmented, and offline. Customers found it challenging to avail quality services conveniently, and service professionals were struggling to make ends meet, having to rely upon several middlemen, contractors, and local aggregators. The founders felt that the industry was ripe for disruption, and launched Urban Company, with three key principles in mind:
- Customer love: Build a platform that offers truly delightful and differentiated services
- Partner empowerment: Build a deep, full-stack partnership with service partners, helping improve their earnings and overall livelihood
- Technology first: Bring innovation and technology to an age-old industry
About the Role
About the Platform Team – Frameworks Pod. The Frameworks Pod is a mission-critical team within Urban Company’s Platform Engineering vertical. It owns and evolves foundational engineering frameworks that enable developer productivity, consistency, and scale across the company. This pod is the engineering backbone of UC and powers:
- Authentication Platform: UC’s secure, flexible auth layer powering partner, customer, and internal access across apps and services.
- Translations Platform: Real-time internationalization framework with centralized language management and fallback support.
- Events Platform: Internal eventing bus for pub-sub based decoupled communication, supporting high-throughput transactional and async use cases.
- UC ORM: UC’s in-house Object Relational Mapper that powers both MySQL and MongoDB systems. It has built-in monitoring, alerting, circuit breakers, and connection management—helping developers ship fast without worrying about DB-level intricacies.
- UC OpenAPI Framework: Standardized, auto-documented OpenAPI spec framework to drive consistency and inter-service contract clarity across microservices.
- Experimentation Platform: Scalable A/B testing infrastructure used across product, ops, and growth pods to enable metrics-driven rollout and iteration.
Responsibilities
- Build foundational frameworks: Architect and evolve reusable, scalable platform components that empower product and infra teams across UC.
- Own platform abstractions: Simplify complex engineering concerns into standardized libraries—abstracting away auth, i18n, events, database management, and more.
- Drive developer productivity: Solve org-level challenges around MTTR, onboarding, and velocity via tooling, frameworks, and smart defaults—leveraging innovations like GenAI where applicable.
- Uphold engineering excellence: Establish patterns and guardrails for API design, observability, circuit-breaking, and data safety across services.
- Power experimentation at scale: Enhance our A/B framework to enable reliable feature rollouts with strong observability and minimal performance tradeoffs.
- Improve resiliency: Ensure framework-level robustness, including graceful failure, self-healing mechanisms, and real-time alerting.
- Collaborate deeply: Work with engineers from infra, product, and analytics to design and deliver building blocks used across the org.
- Mentor & influence: Raise the engineering bar through technical mentorship, deep code/design reviews, and long-term thinking.
Qualifications
- 4–7 years of backend/platform engineering experience.
- Strong background in building internal frameworks, SDKs, or dev tooling used org-wide.
- Excellent programming skills in Go, Java, Node.js, or Python.
- Hands-on experience with relational and NoSQL databases (MySQL, MongoDB), and message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
- Comfort with distributed system design, API specs, and observability patterns.
- Understanding of microservice architecture, CI/CD, and cloud-native principles.
- Strong communication and ability to influence engineering culture and decisions.
Required Skills

What can you expect:
- Massive ownership and a chance to impact how technology shapes home services.
