About the Role & Team

The Payments & Risk Platform team owns the end-to-end money movement infrastructure at Urban Company across India and international markets.

This platform powers:

• Payments as well as refunds across multiple payment gateways, geographies and methods (Cards, ApplePay, UPI, UC Credits etc.) for customers as well as partners.
• Dynamic payment routing and real-time PG health monitoring for achieving industry best success rates and cost efficiency.
• Subscription and Bundle capabilities - pay upfront and redeem later, auto-renewals via Cards, Apple Pay & UPI Mandates
• Commission calculation for different categories (Beauty, AC, Painting, Appliance Repair) and deduction via pre-purchased credits or weekly payouts.
• Payouts (NEFT, UPI, UC Credits) for instant money transfers to customer accounts for addressing the rare post-service issues.
• Fraud detection and prevention basis real-time as well as historical data points spanning customer monetary activity, payment instruments, phone numbers, devices etc

The systems built by this team directly influence company profitability, customer conversion, fraud prevention, accounting correctness, transaction SLAs and international market expansion.

What You’ll Do

• Build and scale high-throughput payment systems handling traffic across India, UAE, KSA, and Singapore.
• Work on microservice-based backend systems powering payments, refunds, payouts, pricing, fraud detection and prevention.
• Design and implement dynamic routing logic across multiple payment gateways.
• Build real-time observability and health tracking for systems under your ownership.
• Contribute to fraud prevention including rule engines and leveraging AI for smarter detection.
• Improve reliability through better retries, concurrency handling, fallbacks, idempotency, and resilience patterns.
• Optimize cost of payments via routing, pricing, and orchestration strategies.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Finance, Ops and Data teams to ship high-impact features.
• Participate in system design discussions and contribute to improving engineering standards.
• Write high-quality, production-grade code with strong testing and monitoring practices.

What We’re Looking For

• 2-4 years of backend engineering experience.
• Strong coding skills in any programming language - C++, Java, Python, JavaScript, Go.
• Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and system design fundamentals.
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases (MySQL, MongoDB).
• Understanding of distributed systems and microservice architecture.
• Familiarity with message queues/event-driven systems is a plus.
• Knowledge of Frontend development is a plus.
• Strong ownership mindset and ability to drive problems end-to-end.
• High attention to correctness - especially important in financial systems.

Experience in payments, fintech, marketplaces, or high-scale transactional systems is a strong plus.
