The Patient Care Aide (PCA) provides non-clinical support and supervision to residents within the nursing facility to promote safety, comfort, and well-being. The PCA assists residents with routine daily activities that do not involve direct physical care, under the direction of licensed nursing staff, and in compliance with facility policy and state and federal regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide supervision and companionship to residents in designated areas of the facility.
  • Monitor residents for safety concerns, wandering, or changes in behavior and report observations promptly to nursing staff.
  • Assist residents with non-contact activities such as conversation, social engagement, reading, or accompanying to recreational programs.
  • Support residents with environmental needs such as adjusting lighting, tidying personal areas, and ensuring mobility aids or personal items are within reach.
  • Escort residents to and from activities or dining areas as directed (without lifting, transferring, or providing physical assistance).
  • Maintain awareness of each resident’s care plan and restrictions to ensure compliance with safety guidelines.
  • Observe and report changes in residents’ mood, participation, or condition to the supervising nurse.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe environment in resident common areas.
  • Participate in staff meetings, in-service training, and safety drills as required.
  • Perform other non-clinical support duties as assigned by supervisory staff.


Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a healthcare, assisted living, or supportive care environment preferred but not required.


Certification:

  • Completion of facility orientation and training program as required by state regulations.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred but not mandatory unless required by state code.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong observation and communication skills.
  • Compassionate, patient, and respectful attitude toward older adults and individuals with disabilities.
  • Ability to recognize and report potential safety or behavioral concerns promptly.
  • Capability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
  • Reliability and ability to follow facility protocols and instructions from licensed staff.


Working Conditions:

  • Work performed primarily within resident care areas and communal spaces of the facility.
  • Regular exposure to residents and staff in a healthcare setting.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and observe residents for extended periods.
