Job Description
The Metal Processing Technician I provides industrial support services in support of the FAA Logistics Center requirements. Tasks include a variety of industrial skills including painting, stenciling, silk screening, cleaning, metal finishing (sandblasting, chemical etching, alodining), and plastic and fiberglass services of mechanical, electrical, electro-mechanical, and electronic parts, assemblies, and subassemblies. The work includes design development from ideas and general concepts provided by the Government and is performed from blueprints, drawings, samples, and written instructions received from the Government.
The position supports the Paint and Metal Processing Support Work Center by providing fabrication and repair services such as painting and metal finishing in accordance with applicable standards. Work includes the application of approved industry standard practices for manual and mechanical painting and metal finishing techniques including sanding, stripping, dipping, mixing, painting, staining, etching, alodining, cleaning, silk-screening, sand-blasting, and stenciling. These processes are applied to finish and refinish NAS equipment and fixtures supported by the FAA Logistics Center.
The technician inspects fabricated items to ensure they conform to and fulfill FAA or original manufacturer specifications, technical documents, and modification instructions when completed.

- Ultra-high frequency Tactical Air Navigational Aid (TACAN) antennas and Low Power TACAN Antennas (LPTA)
- Electronic and mechanical components including transformers
- Rotary joints applicable to Air Route Surveillance Radar (ARSR-1, ARSR-2) and Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR-4, ASR-5, ASR-7, ASR-8)
- Pumps applicable to ARSR-1 and Fixed Pulse systems
- Gear boxes applicable to ARSR-1, ARSR-2, and Fixed Pulse systems
- Radar pedestals for ASR-4, ASR-5, ASR-7, ASR-8, ARSR-1 and Fixed Pulse systems
- Miscellaneous radar antenna sails and Mode S arrays
- Monitor antennas, glide slope antennas, and LPD antennas
- Console cabinets for electronic and radar displays
- Mobile control towers and DME trailers
- Housing assemblies for airport and runway lighting systems.
- Independently perform duties of the metal processing trade including fabrication, repair, sandblasting, cleaning, sanding, power washing, priming, staining, painting, chemical processing, silk screening, and applying markings to newly constructed or repaired equipment and furnishings received from FAA shops.
- Apply painting and metal finishing processes including sanding, stripping, dipping, mixing, painting, staining, etching, alodining, cleaning, silk-screening, sand-blasting, and stenciling.
- Inspect fabricated or processed items to ensure conformance with FAA or original manufacturer specifications, technical documentation, and modification instructions.
- Interpret applicable instructions, blueprints, specifications, and standards in order to complete assigned work.
- Use and maintain applicable tools and equipment used in metal processing operations.
- Maintain proper chemical balance for etching, alodine, and related metal processing tanks.
- Perform sanding booth and sandblaster maintenance including waste dust cleanup, collection for disposal, and record keeping for waste turn-in.
- Maintain metal finishing tanks and keep records of all maintenance performed.
- Use, handle, store, and prepare hazardous chemicals and materials for disposal in accordance with environmental requirements.
- Comply with Environmental Considerations for the use, storage, proper packaging, and preparation for disposal of hazardous waste.
- Perform surface preparation activities including pressure washing and degreasing.
- Conduct media blasting and surface sanding operations.
- Perform chemical finishing, masking, and prime/paint application processes.
- Practical experience in metal processing is required. Duties include fabrication, repair, sandblast, clean, sand, power wash, prime, stain, paint, chemically process, and silk screen processes. This experience must include assisting in reviewing and interpreting drawings, blueprints, and related information.
- Knowledge of metal processing techniques, finishes, chemical etching, anodizing, processing, identification, and surface preparation is required. Knowledge of personal protective equipment, applicable environmental standards, and the ability to understand and follow technical specifications is required.
- High school diploma required. Associate degree or vocational training is desired.
- Must possess TWO forms of unexpired identification to meet eligibility requirements.
- One Primary form of government-issued identification, selected from the following:
- Valid REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state-issued ID card.
- U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Transportation ID Card.
- U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card.
- Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551).
- U.S. Military or U.S. Military dependent’s ID Card with photograph.
- U.S. Government Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Card.
- One secondary form of identification, such as:
- Social security card.
- Original or certified copy of a birth certificate.
- certificate of U.S. Citizenship or Naturalization.
- Voter registration card.
- Specialized knowledge of FAA systems, equipment, procedures, and operations is highly desired.
