What we are looking for…
The Proud Trust is the custodian of The Proud Place, Manchester’s purpose built LGBTQ+ community centre. On the site of the original footprint of the 1988 built “Gay Centre”, The Proud Place was rebuilt and reopened in 2022, now over three floors and clad in gold, a beacon of hope for the LGBTQ+ community of Manchester and beyond.
We are looking for a passionate, enthusiastic and entrepreneurial person to join our team. A person who can positively engage our community and is strategic in the development of events, activities and opportunities that happen within The Proud Place, with a view to future sustainability - environmental, social and financial. With income generation targets to make the role financially sustainable in the long term, you will be responsible for creating a thriving sober community hub, through a blend of free and paid events that respond to our communities needs and interests. As well as someone who has experience of organising, promoting and delivering inclusive events, we are also looking for someone who has a strong foundation in building management as you will be overseeing the day-to-day maintenance and ensuring the building’s compliance.
Vacancy Details
Grade: Manager
Full‑time role (37.5 hours per week), including across evenings and weekends.
Salary: Starting £34,005 per annum plus 5% pension contributions
Reports to: Senior Leadership Team
Responsible for: Community groups, volunteers and contractors (and an anticipated staff team)
Location: On site at The Proud Place, Manchester
Starting no sooner than 1 April 2026, this role will be subject to a one year fixed term contract, with a view to extend, if income generation targets are met.
Successful applicants must be legally able to work in the UK, complete an enhanced DBS check, and provide suitable references.

Job Description
Overall Purpose of the Role
You will work collaboratively with colleagues across the team to ensure that The Proud Place operations, events, activities and opportunities are shaped around the specific needs and interests of the LGBTQ+ community. This is a varied role where you will manage and maintain functions of The Proud Place, including health and safety responsibilities as well as positively engage with community group users and other stakeholders, to ensure smooth running of all of our spaces. The ultimate requirement for this role is to ensure the future environmental, social and financial sustainability of The Proud Place, maximising its potential as a queer sober space, as such this role will have income generation KPI’s. A core focus of this role is to drive income generation through strategic venue hire, paid events, partnerships and community‑led enterprise models, ensuring The Proud Place becomes a financially resilient and thriving community asset.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Cultural
● Demonstrate a strong commitment to equality, LGBTQ+ rights, youth and community work, and the values of The Proud Trust.
● Ensure community members participate in planning and delivery of services where desirable and appropriate.
● Ensure work is planned and delivered with respect for the diversity of people engaged in the organisation.
● Contribute to a positive, inclusive and collaborative culture across The Proud Place.
● Embed structured community consultation methods (surveys, focus groups, user panels) to ensure programming and building use reflect community priorities.
Operational
● Building Management and Compliance
○ Plan, oversee, supervise, quality assure and evaluate The Proud Place’s operations, maintenance and management.
○ Undertake day‑to‑day building management, including stock control and roof garden maintenance. Oversee facilities management: planned and preventative maintenance, weekly checks, safety testing, inspections, repairs, cleaning, bookings, security and systems.
○ Maintain awareness of legislative changes relating to buildings and how this impacts LGBTQ+ communities.
○ Act as the organisation’s Health & Safety Lead, including reviewing systems, supporting managers, delivering training, and being part of the emergency on‑call rota.
○ Be reactive to changes and risks that may impact activities in the building.
● Community Engagement and Events
○ Design and deliver a dynamic inclusive annual events programme including free community‑building activities and paid events that generate unrestricted income.
○ Develop tiered event models (community socials, ticketed workshops, corporate away‑days, cultural events) to diversify audiences and revenue.
○ Ensure consultation findings directly inform programming, pricing, partnerships and building operations.
○ Develop mechanisms for community‑led event proposals and co‑production.
○ Champion community‑led event development, ensuring free and paid opportunities are shaped with and for LGBTQ+ communities.
○ Engage diverse LGBTQ+ communities in shaping and using The Proud Place, supporting volunteer‑led adult groups to thrive.
○ Manage relationships with community groups, building users, neighbours and partners, balancing organisational and community needs.
○ Work with partners to protect, maintain and celebrate the heritage of the organisation and building. Convene stakeholder meetings and ensure meaningful engagement with user groups.
● Income Generation and Business Development
○ Develop and deliver an annual income generation plan for The Proud Place, including venue hire, paid events and partnership agreements.
○ Work proactively with the fundraising team to identify and cultivate new income streams (corporate partnerships, private hire, community fundraising events, commissioned activity). Set, monitor and report on monthly and annual income targets, adjusting strategy to ensure financial sustainability for the building and the post.
○ Analyse market trends in venue hire and LGBTQ+ community spaces to position The Proud Place competitively and ethically.
● People Management
○ Lead and manage staff and volunteers in line with The Proud Trust’s policies. Support line management across internal teams and be a visible manager within the building.
○ Supervise staff, coordinate team meetings, oversee CPD and practice sharing.
○ Carry out appraisals and performance reviews.
○ Ensure staff participate in development and training, and commit to personal development.
○ Work with the Senior Leadership Team on operational, training and staffing matters.
● Planning and Reporting
○ Create an annual organisational plan for The Proud Place to ensure social and financial viability. Generate and share research, data and insight to support operations, including through community consultations.
○ Manage CRM records, reporting and statistics.
○ Project manage grant‑funded programmes, ensuring targets, budgets, outputs and outcomes are met.
○ Attend internal meetings, Board meetings and represent the organisation externally.
○ Oversee safeguarding processes for The Proud Place, working with the safeguarding lead.
○ Horizon scan for future opportunities and develop events that support both public benefit and staff wellbeing.
● Marketing and Communications
○ Market and advertise events and services through newsletters, webpages, social media and press opportunities.
○ Identify and develop opportunities to raise the profile of The Proud Place and The Proud Trust.
○ Support the creation of resources in line with branding guidelines.
