JOB DESCRIPTION Humanities Teacher, 8th Grade Start Date: August 31, 2026 Salary: $60,000 - $150,000 Schedule: 10-month position covered by the Professional Employees' Federation (PEF) Regular schedule: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, with one extended day per week until 5:00 PM for section meetings Required to attend one multi-day overnight trip each year About Bank Street School for Children A leader in progressive education for more than 100 years, the Bank Street School for Children provides students, from nursery through 8th grade, an education that engages their natural curiosity, nurtures critical thinking, and helps to develop a sense of community and social responsibility. About the Position The Bank Street School for Children is seeking a passionate, knowledgeable, and team-oriented Humanities teacher. Humanities covers Language Arts (reading, literature and writing) and Social Studies. The humanities teacher also serves as a homeroom teacher. Homeroom Advisory covers social emotional support, executive function support, and close collaboration with a homeroom co-advisor, who is the Math/Science teacher. The ideal candidate will be excited about working with middle school students in a progressive school that values social justice and equity. Key Responsibilities Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Teaching a Humanities curriculum (social studies and literature/language arts) to middle school students that is responsive to children's developmental capacities and needs Along with the math/science teacher, serving as a homeroom teacher for each student, supporting their social-emotional, cognitive, and physical development Communicating and collaborating regularly with families and others who support learning and growth Facilitating a Community & Identity curriculum - advisory-style programming on community, digital citizenship, relationships, human growth and development, identity, and effective communication Experience with Google Suite, and adept at use of technology to support teaching and learning Organizing and maintaining a positive classroom community that reflects curricular work Differentiating instruction to support group and individual learning Providing extra help to students as necessary during work periods and before school Sharing progress and concerns with families through conferences and a written report in the fall and spring terms Communicating with tutors and outside providers, as needed Meet bi-weekly with the student learning and support team, which includes the learning specialist and the mental health specialist Attending regular faculty, division, department, and supervisory meetings Being committed to addressing issues of social justice, diversity, equity, and anti-bias education in our curriculum and in our community; teachers must be willing learners and participants in supporting this work and engage in their own identity-development individually and with colleagues School Community Responsibilities Fulfill community duties such as lunch supervision, recess, and study hall. Support school coverage needs by assisting across the division as needed Assist with event planning, class trips, assemblies, and special programs Complete all required documentation, records, and administrative tasks in a timely manner Contribute to College-wide committee work and divisional and institutional program development and evaluation as appropriate Perform additional duties as assigned by a supervisor Qualifications Required: At least 3-5 years teaching experience in middle school grades Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred Demonstrated knowledge and expertise with regard to adolescent development, progre sive
