BackgroundVidya & Child works with marginalised children in the education space, in last 27 years has established a presence in 4 communities in Noida. A model of engagement which has ensured less than 5% drop out, equal gender ratio, 600 children completing higher education working across 21 careers. A deep relationship with the parent community ensures support for the child to complete education.
The engagement model comprises our own schools till Class 8, After Schools from Class 9 to 12 and extending support for higher education. Intensive engagement with the family of the child over a 15-year period, till completion of school education ensures that the child does not drop out.
The Vidya & Child School is a registered school under UP State Board from Nursery to Class 8 providing free education to children from low-income families living in urban slums of Noida. The children are first generation learners with very little exposure at home, facing multiple challenges on account of various socio-economic factors. The education process at Vidya & Child aims at providing a child centric, value-integrated, and holistic learning environment that tries to create a safe, bias-free, enjoyable environment for children. We deeply connect with the child, and the family, develop a shared vision with the parent to ensure that the child remains in the education process and doesn’t drop out. Engagement with the child creates a space for the child to share and express struggles and challenges, so we can understand their relationship with self, friends, family, and community and in the long term enable the child to make responsible choices.
Through the learning process, we focus on the child to relate concepts learnt in classrooms to real life situations, the focus being on learning through activities and in small groups. The child is motivated to improve and be in a continuous learning process. The Facilitator’s role involves deeply connecting with each child, extends beyond academic interactions, beyond the classroom, across all aspects impacting a CHILD – social, emotional, physical, academic, creative, till Class 8. The child is then admitted into a mainstream school in Class 9, choice of school is based on child's aptitude, family circumstance and partners which Vidya & Child has developed with various schools in the neighbourhood.
The After School Support Programme supports a child through Classes 9 to 12 in the afternoon for completion of school education from a mainstream school. Engagement through after school academic support, entrance coaching support, life skills sessions, parent engagement and career counselling process enable the child to complete school education and aspire for higher studies through professional and vocational education.
Your role will comprise that of a Saathi (A teacher, a friend of the child), for Class 3 to 10, teaching English as per the NCERT/ CBSE Curriculum as well as taking classes focusing on building English Exposure for Class 3 to 10 through various activities.
Building exposure in English is critical. Children are largely first-generation learners with no exposure to the English-Speaking world. Building exposure in English is imperative to ensure that academically and in careers in future children can do well. The work would involve building English Skills in Listening, Speaking and Reading in children through various tools – Audio/ Visual, Group Discussion/ Activities/ Role Plays, Reading, Narrating.
The detailed role and responsibilities are outlined below. The essence of all engagements being that the connect with the child is the key and most important factor defining all work and efforts.
Role of a SaathiClasses for English Language development shall be assigned to you. You will need to plan for each class to ensure that you are able to perform the role assigned in the following manner.
· Understanding, connecting, and building relationship with each child and family.
· Creating a positive learning environment, where each child feels welcomed and encouraged to question and learn.
· Design and Implement teaching - learning processes where the child is able to connect and apply concepts learnt to real-life situations. Learning to be fun!
· Consistently record and track the observation and progress of each child across various defined parameters of holistic development.
· Working with peer groups on regular basis to identify the critical needs of every child and applying innovative, positive methodologies to help each child overcome different challenges.
· Maintain a respectful, progressive, and in-depth relationship with the family of the child.
· Focus on self-learning and development to address the needs of each child in the classroom.
· Building academic rigour in children, enabling children to create and implement self-study plans.
· Facilitating sessions through which children can learn about different learning methodologies according to their interest, aptitude, and abilities.
· Align the academic work with academic work happening in the schools where children study. Track their performance at school. This is specifically for children in Class 9 and Class 10.
Focus on English ExposureTaking English Exposure Classes for Classes 3 to 10
Focus on Listening, Speaking and Reading Skills in English.
The child is not comfortable with the English language, exposure needs to be built to enable the child to apply learning in daily life. This will enable the child to be able to learn the Language and retain interest to further academic and career development in the future.
The child’s learning is dependent on the facilitator being able to reach out to EACH CHILD, relating the engagement in the class to the Child’s life and observing the learnings demonstrated by the child at each STEP of the learning process. Lesson plans implementation would need to ensure that it is customised keeping the interest of the child.
· Focus on building exposure for Listening, Speaking and Reading Skills in English.
· Apply different tools as per a customised lesson plan, depending on the needs of the class/ child - Audio/ Visual, Group Discussion/ Activities/ Role Plays, Reading, Narrating.
· Learning process encourages the Child to be a Self-learner.
· Learning to focus on the child implanting learnings in Daily life.
Preparing Lesson Plans for English Exposure Classes
Focus on Listening, Speaking and Reading Skills in English.
· Preparation of lesson plans for each class keeping in mind the child. Every child engages differently, and it is important that the learning be focused on the child applying the learning in regular life.
· Research/ Curate content through which the child can be exposed to English. Develop strong skills in Listening, Speaking and Reading in English through various tools applied in classrooms. – Audio/ Visual, Group Discussion/ Activities/ Role Plays, Reading, Narrating.
· Preparation of lesson plans customised to each specific classroom and child requirements.
· Organising materials for implementation of the lesson plans – Audio Visual Material/ Books/ other material.
· Ensure flexibility in lesson plans to address challenges and be able to respond to immediate situations in the classrooms.
Tracking Progress for EACH CHILD
· Understand progress of each child.
· Build the next steps, depending on where the child is in the learning process.
We have a child-wise tracking process, what and how the child has learnt defines the next steps in the engagement in the classroom. Each child would need to be tracked to understand how the content needs to be adjusted to ensure that every child learns.
· Meeting with Class teachers at regular intervals to build understanding of each child.
· Direct Interaction with Children in classrooms.
· Documentation of progress of each child and define next steps.
· Participating in Child-wise review process related meetings and identifying & tracking actions for both children and families.
· Curating/ Researching/ Changing content to focus on specific needs of children.

· Collaboratively working with different stakeholders to ensure effective, robust and long-term engagement with children and their families
· Continuous thinking & work around building an atmosphere of positivity, learning and motivation for children & families.
