Department

Qualification
- MD in Transfusion Medicine or DNB in Transfusion Medicine
- Registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the respective State Medical Council.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of post-qualification experience as a Consultant or Specialist in Transfusion Medicine.
- Experience in a NABH/NABL-accredited hospital or blood centre is preferred.
Job Summary
The Consultant – Transfusion Medicine will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of blood transfusion services, ensuring the availability of safe blood and blood components, maintaining regulatory compliance, and providing clinical consultation for transfusion practices. The role involves managing the blood centre, supporting clinicians with transfusion-related decisions, and ensuring quality standards in accordance with NABH, NACO, and applicable regulatory guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise blood bank and transfusion medicine services.
- Ensure the collection, processing, testing, storage, and issue of blood and blood components.
- Provide clinical consultation on appropriate blood component therapy and complex transfusion cases.
- Investigate and manage transfusion reactions and haemovigilance activities.
- Ensure safe transfusion practices across all hospital departments.
Operational Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with NACO, NABH, NABL, Drugs & Cosmetics Act, and other statutory regulations.
- Monitor blood inventory and ensure adequate stock levels.
- Supervise blood donor recruitment, donor screening, and blood collection activities.
- Coordinate with clinical departments for optimal blood utilization.
- Maintain accurate records, documentation, and statutory reports.
Quality & Compliance
- Implement and monitor quality management systems within the blood centre.
- Participate in internal audits, external quality assurance programs, and accreditation activities.
- Develop and update SOPs in line with regulatory requirements.
- Ensure adherence to infection control and patient safety protocols.
Academic & Training Responsibilities
- Conduct training programs for medical, nursing, and technical staff on transfusion practices.
- Participate in CMEs, departmental meetings, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Support research, audits, and academic activities related to Transfusion Medicine.
Required Skills
- Sound knowledge of transfusion medicine principles and blood banking operations.
- Strong understanding of regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Excellent clinical judgment and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and stakeholder management.
- Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and maintain high-quality standards.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with haemovigilance programs.
- Exposure to automation and blood bank information systems.
- Experience in tertiary care or multi-specialty hospitals.
