Job Description

Contract Backend Engineer (Node.js)

Location: Remote (UK, South Africa, or similar time zones preferred)

Rate: £300 per day

Contract Length: Initial 2 months

Start: ASAP

We’re supporting a client who needs an experienced Backend Engineer (Node.js) to help clear a growing support and development backlog.

This role would suit someone who is comfortable jumping into an existing codebase, quickly understanding the architecture, and shipping fixes and improvements without a long ramp-up period.

You’ll be working alongside an internal team but operating at a more senior level than a typical support developer, helping unblock issues, resolve technical debt and keep development moving.

What you'll be doing

  • Picking up and resolving items from the backend support backlog
  • Debugging and fixing production issues in a Node.js environment
  • Improving performance and stability across existing services
  • Supporting the internal engineering team with backend improvements
  • Shipping pragmatic solutions quickly and safely

What we’re looking for

  • Strong Node.js backend development experience
  • Comfortable working in existing production systems
  • Able to become productive very quickly
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working in remote, distributed teams

AI-assisted development

Using modern AI development tools is expected in this role.

You should already be comfortable using tools such as:

  • Cursor
  • Claude Code
  • GitHub Copilot or similar

These are part of the development workflow and help accelerate delivery.

If you’re a backend engineer who enjoys jumping into real problems and getting things fixed quickly, this could be a great short-term engagement.
