The Athletic Field Maintenance Technician I is responsible for preparing and maintaining athletic fields. While work will typically be servicing Cary's exceptional community recreation fields, one may be assigned as part of a crew at one of the higher-level fields.
We are seeking a skilled professional with technical knowledge in turf management and athletic field preparation. The ideal candidate will also possess the ability to working collaboratively or individually to achieve the best outcome.
The Athletic Field Maintenance Technician I works under general supervision from a Facilities Coordinator and/or Athletic Field Maintenance Team Lead. This position may require weekend work or flexed schedules. Facilities Maintenance positions are "critical positions", meaning you are required to report to work during adverse weather or other emergency situations, to maintain equipment and/or assist in any capacity necessary to continue Cary operations.
Provides support for athletic events as needed;
Mows and prepares fields for play, often with short notice or turn around between games;
Maintains the structural integrity of the playing surface by rebuilding mounds, baselines, batter's boxes, infield, etc.;
Maintains fencing and other surrounding structures;
Develops and maintains turf at an acceptable standard;
Operates equipment in cutting trees and limbs around facility;
Creates and maintains landscape designs around the facility;
Measures, lays off, paints lines on fields prior to play;
Performs routine maintenance and repair on equipment;
Inspects facilities and fields to insure they are safe;
Works with hazardous weather response team for snow, ice, debris removal;
Performs Other Job-related Tasks As Required.
Work in this class is medium to heavy work and may require exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, and rain. An employee must have the physical agility to move about freely including climbing stairs and ladders, walking for long periods and the endurance necessary to operate equipment. Moderate to heavy lifting is required in performing the work. Visual acuity is necessary to perform paperwork, read gauges, and make repairs. An employee must also be able to hear, talk, and smell.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school with some experience working in athletic field maintenance.
Possession of a valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record.
Possession of a Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with an acceptable driving record, or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
Graduation from a community college with a degree in turf management, agronomy or related field is preferred and may be substituted for experience working in athletic field maintenance and/or turf management.
Special Requirements
National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS 100 and ICS 700 training/certification required (provided)
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment

- Knowledge of turf management, landscaping and horticulture;
- Knowledge of and skill in the use of specialty equipment used in turf management;
- Knowledge of the sports played in the facilities to which employee is assigned;
- Knowledge of the field dimensions for the sports played at assigned facility;
- General knowledge of plant growth characteristics and proper techniques for pruning and shaping;
- General knowledge of the species of flowers, trees, and shrubs indigenous to central North Carolina;
- General knowledge of the appropriate safety precautions of the work;
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; ability to work effectively with outside crews;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with customers and the general public;
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
